First - Chapter 5First closed the book that he had been reading, not before taking note of the page number so he could get back to where he was later: it was almost time to go pick up Collin. He stood up from the couch holding the book in his one hand and the dictionary in the other. I had finally taken First to a friend´s workshop and could get his hand fixed by a fair price.
The dictionary was his trusty reading companion lately. He often found new words he didn´t know and he liked to understand everything that he read. The books in my library told amazing stories he had never thought could be possible and told of so many people and their lives. So many different stories, real or fictional, stored in just a few bookshelves space!
He was about to take both books back to their place, but the newspaper that lay over the table to one side of the dictionary caught his attention with one of the words he saw often on the news but that he could never get the meaning of.
He opened the book onc
First - Chapter 4Lounging on my bed, I heard the door´s lock clicking open.
Hello, First I chanted from behind my book.
Tanya! said Collin´s voice.
Collin? I said, putting the book down.
A couple of small feet came galloping down the hall towards my bedroom and I sat up to receive the tearful little face.
What happened? I asked, as alarmed as I could get.
But the boy was weeping loudly now, and seemed completely unable to pronounce a single understandable word. I noticed First had just become slightly visible through my door, and was watching quietly from afar.
I called him over.
First, what happened?
The robot´s eyes flashed around a little bit, and he opened his mouth, apparently trying to find the right answer.
We were walking he said, still looking around the room. Two men came that wanted me. Collin said I wasn´t for sale. One man had a gun in his pocket
I gasped. Then I had a look at Coll
All of a suddenAnd all of a sudden, the world was over
At least in the way that we had known it; that everybody in this world, in all of its history had ever known it.
Whatever caused it, no one knew. Whether there were other beings alive, no one could know either. All we knew now was this over here, our new world, our new dark, desolate home. And yet, no one knew that very well, either. And how could they, with what its become?
Our former houses and buildings are all to the ground; the people scavenge for food and shelter; all communications to the outside world that is if there even is an outside world- are obsolete and inexistent.
The little sunlight thats barely left through by the greyish fog that covers this city ever since only allows us to see misery, illness and destruction.
Whats left of humanity is no longer human. Those who didnt die instantly or because of disease are now fighting for survival against their once friends and neighbours. Humanity has be
Too late I realize my mistake. Only when all is done...
Gashir... You´ve had your vengeance, now. What else could you take away from me?
Aren´t you happy now, Gashir? Didn´t you get what you wanted? Why won´t you let me be?
It´s nearing midnight again, and here I am, sitting on my chair... Counting the remaining seconds... 59... 58... 57... Staring out the window, into the impenetrable gloom... 44... 43... 42... How could I have ever known it would come to this? How was i supposed to know?
Nearing midnight now... 23... 22... 21... Why won´t you let me be? I think i´ve already paid for your torment with interests! And still you won´t leave me alone! How long is this going to last? You won´t stop until you´ve destroyed me completely, will you? You want to see me suffer for what you´ve suffered! You want to see me dead!
11... 10... 9... Oh no, it´s going too fast...
4... 3... Wait! 2... 1...
Curse that chime...
First - Chapter 3What makes a human human?
If anyone asks you what a human is, you could say it´s an intelligent animal, 4 to 6 feet tall, with two legs, two arms, a head, a brain, a nose, eyes, ears, feels pain, needs to eat to stay alive, needs to sleep and the list goes on and on. But what if a human were to lose a leg? Then he wouldn´t be human anymore?
You shake your head and reconsider: a human is an intelligent animal born with two legs, two arms But what about those people that are born without a limb? Does that make the answer a bit more complicated? And what about those unfortunate enough to be born attached to their twins by a side, or sometimes even sharing an organ, or those who are born so attached together that it seems more likely to say its a baby with two heads or three arms? Aren´t any of those humans?
At this point you would probably need a few minutes to make your next reply.
Imagine a person who can´t hear and can´t see. Could you conceiv
First - Chapter 2So whats in a body? Isnt the soul whats real? What does the body have that makes it inhabitable for a soul? Souls cant inhabit rocks or chairs or clocks any more than they can inhabit a robot? But why not?
A soul is free. A soul feels everything. A soul enters a body and it feels oppressed, trapped, caged. A body of matter is a great impediment for the soul. So it might as well have some comforts. If youre going to enter a car, that car might as well have windows to the outside, and pedals and a wheel to move around. Thats why we have hands and legs. Thats why we have eyes, and a nose and ears. And, of course, a brain to think and to process feelings and emotions and ways to express them. They are nothing but tools to help the soul feel just a little bit freer in its cage. Does a dog feel more than a beetle? Most probably, but only because its a more complicated piece of machinery. Its got more possibilities, we could say.
